SWOT - Ken Fries
Strengths
Weaknesses
Opportunities
Threats
- Has done a good job at long-range planning for this campaign.
- Has a strong fiscal backing.
- Has the local network needed to implement a grassroots campaign this summer.
Weaknesses
- Still a political neophyte though the contested primary seasoned him up a bit.
Opportunities
- Ken will be able to get a first-hand look at the job he is seeking as the chief deputy. He will discover nuances in the position that he might not have known otherwise.
Threats
- Herman is a love-him/ hate-him kind of guy among the Republican base. His endorsement of Fries could soften Ken's base a bit. But other than that it is Ken's to lose. Pat Love is the only Democrat to win a countywide seat in a long time.

How about weaknesses: lots of people really don't like his arrogance?
yea, I have heard from many sources that he didnt even treat his primary opponents with respect b/c he knew he already had it "locked up".
Can't let those comments go unaddressed...don't confuse professional competence and confidence with arrogance and let's hear the examples of this lack of respect. It appeared that all the Republican candidates for Sheriff were professional in their campaigns.
A lot of party insiders do not like him because he backed Marty Bender over Jim Herman for Sheriff 8 years ago.
This put him in direct opposition to Joe Squadrito, who many Republicans thought could do no wrong.
I think that the Republicans need to start looking carefully at who is wantiing to run for office......like do they even have a college educations (Fries, Brown, Bloom no sheepskin)? The Sheriff is really a pencil pushing administrator.
Anonymous #2: You mean like Souder didn't treat Wm. Larsen with respect? I certainly saw a lot more mutual respect in the sheriffs race than in the 3rd district Republican primary.
Anonymous #4: Doesn't seem like Herman cares anymore, given Fries's new job...
Education is not a prerequisite for leadership. Neither Washington nor Lincoln (among others) had a sheepskin.
Above anonymous...Those two examples are not valid because of the context each aforementioned president lived in. Lincoln was a self taught lawyer and Washington was of the afluent farming class of Virginia, giving him the leisure to study on his own.
In the current American society, each scenario that the respective presidents represented would never be possible. Lawyers need FORMAL education in today's society and there is no longer pressure if you are of the elite class to study on your leisure (evidence: Paris Hilton).
I am not saying that any of the aforementioned candidates would are incompitent in doing their respective offices. Fries has had 24 years of experience on the Sheriff's department and institutional knowledge is invaluable (look at how much any former congressman turned lobbyist makes).
College isnt everything...
