Thomas Hayhurst SWOT Analysis

Strengths
  • Hayhurst is an experienced campaigner as a multi-termer on the FW city council.
  • As a doctor his fundraising potential is strong. Peer groups in professions such as doctors and lawyers often give extensive financial support to candidates from their ranks.
  • Tom is a nice guy. His personality and demeanor will make it easier to convert the undecided voters he meets.
  • His base of support is Allen county, which represents the largest chunk of the district.

Weaknesses
  • He is a Democratic challenger in one of the most Republican Congressional districts in the country.
  • Dr. Hayhurst isn't viewed as a dynamic leader on the FW city council.

Opportunities
  • The GOP is vulnerable to the growing discontent of independents and its base.
  • Souder has campaigned on his relationship to President Bush in the past as seen at his website. Do I need to go any further with this point?

Threats
  • Dr. Hayhurst's only chance is to come off as a moderate. Should the DNC become a visible force in his campaign that perception disappears.

If he were running on a viable independant ticket, he would likley win.

Souder does not give a rat's hiney about anything but Allen county.

I disagree. He has a better chance as a Democrat than he does an Independent.

Hayhurst is in better shape than the last few opponents Souder has faced. The well-travelled congressman has not endeared himself to voters and even strong Republicans have lost faith in him. He will be haunted by his term limit promise, the many, many trips he takes, and his inability to bring or retain jobs in his district. Hayhurst need only publish the photo of Mark in a foxhole to show the representation we have received during is term.

For me it comes down to issues. I do not care if the guy has little money to spend. Neither candidate will buy my vote. I do not actually care if the candidate is nice or not. I want a candidate who has moral integrity, I have a good understanding how the individual will vote, is consistent and wants to control spending and taxes to balance all aspect of the budget.

Souder has no real issues. He follows the pack and in my opinion is not a leader. He says he is a fiscal conservative, but yet votes for deficits. He uses the "excuse" that he identifies his earmarks, but says earmarks are out of control. He is a conciencous objector, yet votes for gong to war. He appears to support ethanol, yet it is an energy loss. He is for veterans, yet VA form 10-10EZR requires all service related injured vets to provide their net-worth, balances in checking, savings, equities, IRA's, 401K's and other property prior to being treated for their service related injuries.

Dr. Hayhurst says he is for affordable healthcare. We are all for affordable healthcare. I have heard he is also for a balanced budget. Other than that, I do not know much about Tom.

I know what Souder is and I do not like his positions. I am devoting time to learning about Dr. Hayhurst, character and issues.

Souder does not have my vote.

I'm with Pundit here. "Viable" and "Independent" are hard words to align in a GOP stronghold (read: stranglehold) like Allen County.
