Lets Make a Deal
It appears that Phyllis Pond has made several deals in order to keep her post. I have learned from multiple credible sources that she has pledged her support to three seperate candidates promising each that she would back their candidacy when she decides to retire if they chose not to run against her in this primary. That could happen as early as next year.
One of those potential candidates is none other than the sister of her current opponent, Denny Worman. If this is true one would have to wonder if it was intended to mix the support of the Worman/ Lightfoot clans and weaken the threat posed by her current opponent.

I've heard that rumor too.
Word has it that Ken Fries has promised jobs all over the place in order to gain support.
The most popular job he has promised seems to be for someone to run the Dispatch- so I guess that means he is NOT willing to have a combined system with the city.
Probably for the best- it will be to crowded anyway- since he has promised that job to at least two people
I talked to Ken and know that none of that is true.
I will comment on Phyllis Pond later. First, I wished to respond to anonymous who posted the second comment.
The second commenter is particularly disingenous. First the commenter writes, "the word is" which puts the rest of what is written in the light of gossip. Then the commenter writes as if it is fact.
Here's what I know. The first is that these types of rumors are a staple of Sheriff's races. The "He's going to appoint X Chief Deputy" or "He's going to appoint Y as head of the Warrants Division" rumors has been part of every Sheriff's campaign I have witnessed since Bud Meek's first race.
The only times there have not been such rumors is when a Sheriff's candidate like Joe Squadrito announced who his Chief Deputy would be during the campaign.
The second is that people try to spread rumors about the front-runner. It is often the mark of which candidate is the acknowledged front-runner.
The third is the most important. I know that one of the cardinal and signal underpinnings from the beginning of Ken Fries campaign two years ago was that there were to be no promises of any jobs. Ken Fries knew that these types of things would be circulated in the waning days of a primary campaign. He anticipated that and has made it pretty clear for two years - folks in command positions will be selected on merit, on experience, and on ability.
Now, on to Phyllis Pond. I doubt very much whether State Representative Pond made any promises of support.
How do I know that? First, Phyllis and I were first elected to the Indiana House in the same year - 1978. Second, I have known Phyllis since I was 6 years old.
Third, I witnessed what she told one prospective candidate last year. I suspect that it is the same thing she has told all of the others alluded to in the post.
It was this: She told the prospective candidate that she knew the person was probably interested in succeeding her one day. She then told him she was running for re-election in 2006. She said it was likely she would be retiring from the House in either 2008 or 2010. She told the person it would be better for the person to wait until it was an open seat.
The upshot is that she was really telling people something quite different than what has been suggested in the post. In a few words, she communicated the following:
1. The seat would soon be open.
2. If you run now, you will likely be defeated.
3. If you run now, you will change the possibility of a prospective endorsement to the certainty of opposition from the departing incumbent when the seat does become open.
I've heard that she will never retire and that she will never endorse.
I heard one of the "Pond" rumors while I was visiting the Allen County Election Board yesterday.
It concerned just one candidate and Phyllis Pond...
Rumors are just that, rumors...
Mike Sylvester
I heard that one of the County Council candidates was seen throwing something off the Tallahatchie bridge.
I heard that more than one of the candidates running for the East Allen School Board is a pedagogue.
I think somebody is having too much fun with a dictionary.
Mitch Harper is absolutely right regarding his comments on Fries and Pond.
I think it was Cal Miller, in a brown car no less, throwing Irving signs into the river.
