Who gets to Say "Reach for the Sky"
To say that the Sheriff's race is contested is an understatement. For me to say who is the best man for the job, I can't. What I can tell you is who has the best shot at representing their party in the primary.
There are four Republicans. Mike Foster, Ken Fries, Mike Keesler, and Guy Griffith. Only two of them have the network of people and name recognition at this point.
Mike Foster has been active in many aspects of the GOP for several years and Ken Fries has gathered the support of key money people. While it is possible for either Keesler or Griffith to pull it off, they have to make up a lot of ground on the other two in a short amount of time. Ken Fries will most likely win the GOP nomination.
On the Democratic side of the ticket we have Mike Joyner, Tina Taviano, and perpetual wildcard David Roach. Taviano has worked hard to gain favor with many in her party. I don't know how much of that support jumped ship when Joyner declared his candidacy.
Joyner got some buzz within the DEM because of his visibility as the public informations officer for Fort Wayne. Mitch Harper at FW Observed raised a good point about whether it is ethical for him to remain in that position as a candidate.
I don't know who is going to win the DEM from the lineup. Taviano picks up support from alternative lifestyle Democrats. Joyner picks up votes for those who think his visibility gives him a better shot at beating a Republican in a county-wide race.
Now I can't write an article about the sheriff's race without mentioning David Roach. Why? Because if I don't the man will haunt me for the rest of my life. David is also on the DEM ticket. But he is an anti-establishment candidate. His viability as a candidate is zero. Sorry David but its true.

Mike Foster an active Republican for YEARS?
It wasn't that long ago he was a Democrat.
Election cycles are like dog years. They go by quickly and fade into memory.
Mike ran against Souder in 2000. Since then he has been deeply active as a leader of the party's action team which conducts humanitarian efforts throughout the area.
He is a man of strong character.
Joyner has the best chance on the democrat's ticket. As PIO, he has had more public exposure not only with respect to his own primary opponents, but also three out of the four Repbulicans vying for the Sheriff's spot.
I am in firm belief that Joyner, Foster, or Fries are all excellent and well qualified candidates for this office though.
"Alternative lifestyle Democrats?" What the heck does that mean? How about looking at the qualifications of each of the candidates? If you owned a business with $20M in revenue and 350 employees, and you were hiring the manager, wouldn't you want the most qualified? The candidate with education in business and public administration, the candidate who has worked in all of the major areas of the business, the candidate who has administration experience, and the one who is committed to working with business partners (i.e., THE CITY) to maximize your effectiveness?
I have looked at the qualifications of the candidates. She is a qualified candidate. I wasn't looking at thigs from a qualifications aspect. My report was based on the electability of candidates.
Qualifications don't always translate in election victories. I wish they did.
Come on! Does anyone really think that Allen county voters are going to elect a canidate with an alternative lifestyle as Sheriff? Absolutely not. I don't know Mike but I like what I see of him. Someone mentioned earlier that he is not out for the money to win the election. If this is true I like this guy even more. By the way, speaking of business experience I did hear someone say that he was once a big wig corporate manager out east some where for several years. Who can match that experience? None that I can see.
I heard Joyner speak at the St Joe Athletic Club the other night. Wow, this guy spoke with passion, knowledge and with confidence. The above comment thought Joyner was a big wig out east. You got that right, he apparentlt ran offices in 7 states. Said he left it all behind because he wanted to be in law enforcement. Said he was "not" money motivated. Everyone there I spoke with said he won their votes. He has mine. I thought Fries came across as what one would expect, boring and unwilling for change. Taviano on the other hand come across really wierd. Her life style hurts her tremendously. Foster was very interesting. He had a good showing. It will be interesting.
